Southeast Asia’s rapid urbanisation is driving demand for steelmaking capacity to meet the growing needs of infrastructure, transportation and machinery.
AME expects new projects of crude steel
capacity in Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Vietnam and Thailand to reach
27Mt, 28Mt, 20Mt, 35Mt and 2Mt, respectively, over the next decade.
Southeast Asia is emerging as a future
hotspot for large steelmaking hubs. By 2050, Indonesia is expected to be the
fourth largest steelmaking country, while Malaysia will sit within the top 10.
Total crude steel capacity within Southeast Asia will increase by around 111Mt
by 2035.
Indonesia
Dexin Steel is currently one of the largest and
most complete metallurgical projects undertaken by a Chinese-funded enterprise.
The facility has indicated plans to increase crude steel capacity by 14Mt
to 20Mt.
